Abstract


The purpose of this study was to measure the polymerization shrinkage of composite resin and flowable resin
by buoyancy method and volumetric method, and compare the difference between two methods. Four composite
resins (Filtek silorane(FS), Filtek supreme XT(FXT), Clearfil majesty posterior(CMP), and Inten-S(IS)) and four
flowable resins (Denfil flow(DF), Estelite flow quick(EF), Surefil SDR flow(SF), AELITEFLO(AF)) were tested in
this study. Density determination kit(YDK01, Sartorius, Goettingen, Germany) was used for buoyancy method, and
AcuVol (Bisco, Schaumburg, IL, USA) was used for volumetric method. The data was analyzed statistically by
one-way ANOVA and the Duncan¡¯s multiple range test(þà=0.05). The results of polymerization shrinkage measurement
indicated that the polymerization shrinkage rate of all flowable resins were higher than that of all composite
resins regardless of polymerization shrinkage measurement method (p<0.05). The comparison test of all composite
resins resulted that FS showed the lowest polymerization shrinkage among all composite resins. In additions,
the polymerization shrinkage of AF was the lower than that of other flowable resins (p<0.05). The comparison
test of buoyancy method and volumetric method showed that there was no significant difference between two
methods except SF. In summary, volumetric method is recommended to measure polymerization shrinkage of resins
due to the limitation of loading flowable resins to pedestal of density determination kit.
